This page governs the licensing of the comparative-mystery-school research project hosted at thefire.lol, the Fires Series book content, the supporting website code, and any AI-mediated reference tool built on the corpus. Different parts of the project carry different licenses, each appropriate to its category.

TL;DR

CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 — what it means for the research

The research dossiers, the landscape map, the scholar roster, the methodology page, the questionnaire, and the interactive-element content are released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.

In practice this means:

You may:

• Quote dossier sections in your own scholarly, journalistic, or educational work, with citation
• Share the dossiers via direct link or via downloaded copy
• Adapt the dossiers for translation, format-conversion, or restructured presentation
• Build derivative work (your own comparative analyses, your own interactive elements) on the dossier material
• Use the material in classroom teaching, in informed reading groups, in non-commercial public lectures

You must:

• Give appropriate attribution — cite “4LULZ Press / thefire.lol, Comparative Mystery-School Research Corpus, 2026” with a link to the source page. For specific scholarly citations within a dossier, cite the original primary or secondary source the dossier itself cited; the dossier did not produce the underlying scholarship and does not claim it
• Use the material non-commercially — you may not bundle it into a paid product, sell access to derivative work that depends on it, or use it to drive commercial AI training without separate licensing
• Share derivative work under the same license — if you remix, translate, or build on the dossier material, your derivative must also be CC BY-NC-SA 4.0

You may not:

• Strip attribution and pass the material off as your own work
• Use the material to support commercial products without negotiating separate licensing with 4LULZ Press
• Add restrictions to derivative work (no ShareAlike means you can’t relicense more restrictively)
• Use the material to harass, dox, or target named individuals (see the project’s Research Ethics and Purpose page for the harm-prevention discipline that survives any license)

Why CC BY-NC-SA and not just CC BY

The NC (non-commercial) provision protects the corpus from being absorbed into commercial AI training pipelines, sold as a paid reference product by a third party, or bundled into proprietary publications without negotiation. The research is freely available for non-commercial reuse; commercial reuse requires a conversation. This is the standard scholarly-publishing position for material the author wants widely read but also wants to retain commercial agency over.

The SA (share-alike) provision ensures that derivative work — translations, adaptations, restructurings — remains in the same ecosystem of open scholarly material rather than being absorbed into more-restrictive paid products. This propagates the openness.

The Hugo theme code, build scripts, the JS / HTML / CSS implementing the interactive elements, and the supporting automation tools are released under the MIT License:

Fair-use citation as standard scholarly and journalistic convention is welcomed — quote with attribution, discuss, criticize, build your own argument on. Substantial reproduction (entire chapters, large excerpts) requires written permission from 4LULZ Press.

Where dossier material on the website overlaps with book content (cross-references, shared scholarly background, the immune-system thesis, the encoded-teaching pattern), the dossier version is CC BY-NC-SA; the book version remains All Rights Reserved. The thesis is the same; the rights frame differs because the books are commercial products and the website material is not.

AI reference tool output

If an AI-mediated reference tool is built on top of this corpus and deployed at thefire.lol:

• Output text generated by the tool from the published corpus is treated as CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, with the tool’s response including attribution to the specific dossier section(s) the answer was drawn from
• User queries to the tool are treated under the project’s privacy policy (separate page); query logs are not published, not sold, and are kept under explicit retention limits
• Aggregate query patterns — what kinds of questions users ask, what kinds of refusals trigger, what dossier sections are most-cited — may inform future research with anonymized attribution at the aggregate level only
• Refusal patterns themselves are part of the published methodology and are CC BY-NC-SA so other AI-mediated reference tools can use them as a starting point

The tool’s operation is bounded by the Research Ethics and Purpose page’s refusal patterns regardless of license.

Practical notes

For journalists

You can quote dossier passages with attribution. You can use the corpus as a starting point for your own reporting. You can interview the authors of the source scholarship the dossiers cite (the scholar roster names them). You should not represent the dossier’s framing as your own original work; cite the corpus. Substantive reproduction (more than a few paragraphs in any single piece) is fair-use convention with attribution; longer reproduction requires permission.

For academics

Quote and cite under standard scholarly fair-use conventions. The dossiers synthesize primary and secondary scholarship that you should cite directly when possible — if the dossier cites Wolfson on a Kabbalah point, your paper should cite Wolfson too, not just the dossier. The corpus is a navigable index of the underlying scholarship, not a replacement for it. Where the corpus has original framing or synthesis not present in the underlying sources, citation of the corpus is appropriate.

For practitioners

You can read, share, and discuss the material. You cannot use it to claim lineage authority, present yourself as having operative-tradition knowledge you have not received through actual transmission, or commercialize the corpus into a paid course or curriculum without separate licensing.

For derivative-work creators (translators, adapters, anthologists)

Build derivative work, attribute the source, license your derivative under the same CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. Translation into other languages is specifically welcomed and the project will link to verified translations once published.

For AI training (commercial or otherwise)

The corpus is explicitly licensed NC. Use for non-commercial research training is permitted under standard CC BY-NC-SA terms. Use for commercial AI model training requires separate licensing. Note that the project is itself an AI-assisted synthesis, so this is not a luddite restriction; it is a commercial-control choice. Contact 4LULZ Press for commercial licensing inquiries.

Why these particular licenses

The Fires Series is a commercial publishing project; the books carry traditional copyright. The website is a public-good research resource; the content carries CC BY-NC-SA because the author wants the work widely read and adapted but not commercially captured. The code is infrastructural; the author wants others to build similar projects on similar infrastructure, hence MIT. The AI reference tool’s output inherits the corpus license because the tool is a query interface over CC BY-NC-SA material; the queries themselves are governed by privacy considerations distinct from license.

The licensing choices reflect the project’s stance: scholarship and research should circulate freely for non-commercial use, code should be free for all use, books should pay the author who wrote them.
