The standard history of online gaming starts with Ultima Online in 1997. By that point a fourteen-year-old in Oregon had already shipped the multiplayer game that invented every mechanic Zynga would later sell back to us. Tens of thousands of people were playing across networked phone lines. The historians missed the entire decade because they were not on it.
What a Door Game Was
Every BBS ran on a personal computer connected to a phone line through a modem. You called the BBS, the modem answered, and you got a text menu. Message boards. File downloads. Games.
The games were called “doors” because of the technical mechanism. The BBS software wrote a small text file — a “drop file” — containing your session information (username, baud rate, COM port, time remaining), then opened a door to an external program and suspended itself. The game read the drop file, took over the serial port, talked directly to your modem, ran until you quit, and handed control back to the BBS. The architecture rested on one assumption: one phone line, one caller at a time.
Modern developers would call that a fatal limitation. It produced the most important design innovation in the history of online gaming: asynchronous multiplayer. You could not play at the same time as another player because only one person could be on the phone line. So the games gave you a limited number of turns per day, saved your state, and let the next caller take their turns when they logged in. You played against the same people every day, watched their names on leaderboards, attacked their characters while they were offline, flirted with the same NPCs — all without ever being online simultaneously.
This was multiplayer gaming before the term existed. The outsider histories of online gaming do not know it happened.
The Drop File
The mechanism was simple and fragile. When a SysOp installed a door game, they configured the BBS to write a drop file to a specific directory before launching the game executable. The most common format was DOOR.SYS, a 52-line text file from GAP BBS software. Line 1: the COM port. Line 2: the baud rate. Line 10: the user’s real name. Line 18: time remaining.
Other platforms used their own formats — DORINFO1.DEF for RBBS-PC and RemoteAccess, CHAIN.TXT for WWIV. Every door game had to support multiple drop file formats or the SysOp ran a conversion utility. No standards body, no npm install, just a text file and a prayer.
The real engineering problem was the serial port. The BBS owned the COM port and its connection to the modem. Handing that off to an external program meant the door had to talk directly to the UART hardware, which was different on every machine. The solution was the FOSSIL driver (Fido-Opus-Seadog Standard Interface Layer), a 1986 specification that abstracted serial communication into uniform interrupt-based function calls. Bob Hartman’s Opus Comm and Ray Gwinn’s X00 were the standard implementations. FOSSIL drivers were the USB drivers of the BBS era: invisible infrastructure that made everything else possible.
Legend of the Red Dragon
In 1989, a fourteen-year-old named Seth Able Robinson in Oregon had a problem. He ran an Amiga BBS, but the best door games were PC-only. TradeWars would not run on his setup. So he wrote his own game to attract callers.
He coded it in C on the Amiga, then ported it to IBM PC in Turbo Pascal. A month of late nights. The result was Legend of the Red Dragon — a turn-based RPG where you fought monsters in a forest, leveled up, flirted with NPCs named Violet and Seth Able the Bard, and competed with other players to kill the Red Dragon. Fixed number of forest fights per day. When your turns ran out, you logged off and came back tomorrow.
LORD became the most popular BBS door game ever made. Not because it was the deepest. Because Robinson understood something the gaming industry would spend three decades rediscovering: the social layer is the game. LORD had an inn where players chatted. You could flirt with other players’ characters. You could attack them while they were offline and leave taunting messages. The forest fights were the excuse. The community was the product.
The masterstroke was IGMs — In-Game Modules. LORD was extensible. Third-party developers could write plug-in modules that added locations, NPCs, quests, entire game systems. A county fair. A brothel. A haunted house. SysOps competed to have the most IGMs installed, and callers chose BBSes based on which LORD modules they offered. This was the first modding community for an online game, a decade before Counter-Strike skins. One legendary planned IGM called Wizardstone was never released but was the only module referenced inside the game itself — a ghost in the code, a promise of content that never shipped, which is also a tradition the industry would later perfect.
Robinson sold LORD and its sequel to Metropolis Gameport in 1998. By then the BBS era was over, but LORD’s design DNA — daily engagement loops, limited turns, asynchronous PvP, social features layered on top of simple mechanics — would reappear in every Facebook game, every mobile RPG, every “energy system” that throttles your play and brings you back tomorrow. Zynga made billions on mechanics a teenager in Oregon invented to get people to call his Amiga BBS.
TradeWars 2002
The original Trade Wars was written by Chris Sherrick in BASIC for the TRS-80 in 1984. A space trading game — buy goods at one port, sell at another, avoid pirates. Then someone ported it to Pascal, and the Pascal version was, in the words of the man who would fix it, “a hot mess” that “crashed all the time.”
That man was Gary Martin, who in December 1986 created TradeWars 2001 for WWIV BBSes, overhauling the unstable code into something that actually worked. TradeWars 2002 v1.00 followed in June 1991 as a standalone program compatible with any BBS software. Netgames magazine called it “the granddaddy of all BBS games” in 1994. At peak, an estimated 70,000 players were actively playing across thousands of BBSes.
TradeWars was complex in a way modern casual games are not. Sector navigation. Corporate alliances. Economic manipulation. Territory control. Eve Online played at 2400 baud, one turn at a time, with the universe state saved to a flat file on some guy’s 486 in his spare bedroom.
The best part of the TradeWars story is how the game’s final developer got the job. In 1995, a fan named John Pritchett was commuting in traffic and rear-ended Gary Martin’s car. They exchanged insurance information and discovered they were both TradeWars obsessives. Martin hired him. Pritchett developed TW2002 v3.0, adding real-time multiplayer to the DOS game. In 1998, he formed Epic Interactive Strategy, released the TradeWars Game Server for internet play, and in 2000 bought the rights outright. The game that defined BBS-era space trading exists because of a fender bender.
The Brothers Patel
Amit Patel created Solar Realms Elite in 1990 — a turn-based empire-building strategy game where you ruled a solar empire, bought military forces, and colonized planets. It started as a clone of Space Empire Elite, an Atari ST BBS game by Jon Radoff, then diverged. Reviewers called it “advanced for its time” for offering strategic options “unseen in even most current titles in the genre.” The last version (0.994b) was released in 1994. Amit lost the source code in 1996. This is how software history works: the most influential games of an era survive as abandoned executables and forum posts, not in museums.
Amit’s brother Mehul Patel created Barren Realms Elite in 1994 — similar to SRE but with a post-nuclear setting and one critical addition: InterBBS support. This made BRE one of the first games where players on different BBSes competed against each other through nightly data transfers. Your empire on a BBS in Philadelphia was at war with someone’s empire on a BBS in Chicago, with results syncing every night when the modems dialed out. Asynchronous massively multiplayer gaming, built on phone lines and ZIP files.
After the BBS era ended, Mehul Patel built Earth 2025 — a web-based BRE clone coded in Borland Delphi in six weeks — which evolved into Earth Empires. It is still running at earthempires.com. The direct lineage from a 1994 BBS door game to a functioning 2026 web game, maintained continuously for three decades, is one of the most remarkable unbroken chains in gaming history. Nobody outside the BBS world knows it exists.
Global War, and the Letter to Parker Brothers
Joel Bergen ran a WWIV BBS in 1989 and wanted a Risk-like strategy game. He wrote one. The single-line constraint meant players could not take turns simultaneously, so each player got one turn per day, in any order. He called it Global War to avoid Parker Brothers’ trademark on Risk, and actually wrote to Parker Brothers asking for permission. They responded that they “had no interest in the door game and wished me luck.” He sold roughly 3,500 shareware licenses before selling the game to John Dailey Software in 1997.
The Others
Operation Overkill II (Dustin Nulf, 1990) — a post-apocalyptic RPG set in 2060. Nulf gave it away free, selling only a registration code that removed the 10-player limit. Computer historian Benj Edwards called it “one of the deepest and most complex CRPGs available” on BBSes, “viscerally descriptive.” Still maintained at operationoverkill.com.
Usurper (Jakob Dangarden, 1993) — a hack-and-slash RPG in Turbo Pascal. Less popular than LORD but deeper mechanically: 10 races, real class differences, a 100-level dungeon, team warfare, throne politics. Open-sourced under the GPL in 2004. In 2025, Usurper Reborn launched on Steam Early Access — a full C# remake with 60+ autonomous NPCs, a persistent world simulation, and New Game+ where NPCs become aware they are in a loop. Playable in browser, MUD client, or as a BBS door. The door game format refuses to die.
Food Fight (“Rigor Mortis,” late 1980s) — pure comedy. Players earned money, bought groceries, and threw food at other players. Not competitive strategy. Just silly. Beloved precisely because it was silly, in a landscape of serious war and RPG games.
Land of Devastation (Scott M. Baker, 1990) — technically the most ambitious door game ever made. Post-apocalyptic RPG with SuperVGA graphics on both the SysOp and remote ends via a custom terminal program, plus a custom MOD-format musical score. In an era of green text on black screens, Baker shipped graphics and music through a 2400-baud modem. 1,620 SysOps paid to register it.
InterBBS Leagues
The single most impressive technical achievement of the door game era was InterBBS play. Each participating BBS ran a local copy of the game. At night, when long-distance phone rates dropped, the BBS would bundle local game data into compressed archive files (ARC or ZIP), dial another BBS via modem, transfer the data packet using Xmodem or similar, and merge the incoming data into its local game state.
The same mechanism FidoNet used for mail. The game data piggybacked on nightly FidoNet transfers. Players on BBS-A in one city competed against players on BBS-B in another, with results syncing once per day. The first networked multiplayer gaming infrastructure, built entirely on scheduled phone calls between computers.
Barren Realms Elite was the poster child for InterBBS. TradeWars 2002 and Global War also supported it. Modern networks like SciNet and League 10 still run InterBBS gaming leagues, exchanging game data via FidoNet Technology Networks. BBSLink and DoorParty provide centralized door game hosting for the telnet BBS community — same games, same social dynamics, updated plumbing.
The SysOp as Curator
A BBS was only as attractive as its game selection. BBSes were local — you dialed a local phone number to avoid long-distance charges — so communities were geographically local. You played against people in your area code. People you might actually know. People you might run into at the grocery store.
The SysOp curated which door games to install, configured them, registered shareware licenses ($10–$50 per game), moderated conflicts between players, and sometimes wrote custom doors to differentiate their board. A SysOp with LORD plus 30 IGMs drew more callers than one running the base game. The competition between SysOps to have the best game lineup was the app store economy in miniature, a decade before the App Store.
Appointment Gaming Before the Term
Daily turn limits created what mobile gaming now calls “appointment gaming” — limited actions per day, a reason to come back tomorrow. LORD gave you a fixed number of forest fights. BRE gave you a fixed number of turns. When your turns were up, you logged off, and the next person called in.
This was not a monetization strategy. It was a hardware constraint. One phone line, one modem, one caller at a time. If one player monopolized the line for three hours, nobody else could call. Daily limits solved a resource allocation problem. That the solution also created an addictive engagement loop was accidental genius.
What Killed Door Games
The internet. Specifically, flat-rate ISPs offering always-on connections starting around 1994–1995. The BBS model could not compete with the many-to-many, always-on architecture of the internet. MUDs siphoned off the RPG players first. Then the web arrived, and the BBSes emptied.
Most door game developers sold their games or abandoned them between 1997 and 1998. Robinson sold LORD. Bergen sold Global War. The Patels sold BRE. The timing is precise: the BBS ecosystem collapsed in roughly 18 months, between late 1996 and mid-1998, as consumer ISPs reached critical mass.
The games did not die entirely. TradeWars 2002 survived through the TradeWars Game Server, which moved the game to internet play. Telnet BBSes kept door games alive in a diminished form. As of 2026, DoorParty hosts over 180 door games across 50+ nodes. The Telnet BBS Guide lists hundreds of active telnet BBSes, many still running the original DOS door game executables under DOSBox emulation. The games are played by a tiny community of nostalgists and, increasingly, by people who were born after the BBS era ended and are discovering them for the first time.
Why This Matters
The standard history of online multiplayer gaming begins with MUDs (1978), jumps to Ultima Online (1997), and proceeds to EverQuest, World of Warcraft, and the modern MMO. BBS door games are absent. When mentioned at all, it is a footnote. “Some people played text games on BBSes” is the extent of the institutional memory.
This is the same pattern documented throughout Lurk More: outsiders writing the history of a culture they were not part of, producing a record that is technically accurate in its individual claims and comprehensively wrong in what it omits. The people who write gaming histories were, overwhelmingly, not the people who called BBSes. They start the story where they entered it.
Door games were the only multiplayer games in history where the player community was defined by telephone geography. You played against people in your area code because long-distance calls cost money. You might meet your TradeWars rival at a BBS meetup. Your LORD nemesis might be the kid two blocks over. Modern online gaming is global and anonymous. BBS door gaming was local and pseudonymous. No platform has replicated it. No platform has tried.
One phone line. One caller at a time. Daily turn limits. No graphics. 2400 baud. Every constraint that should have killed door games instead produced a design innovation. The best innovations came from teenagers who could not run the software they wanted, so they built their own.
