Companion to GamerGate, Culture Wars, and Crypto (GG1 history and bridge). This file covers the community-driven side: creators, forums, detective work, memes, and the consumer revolt that actually moved numbers.
1. The YouTube/Streaming Ecosystem
The Creator Layer That Replaced Games Journalism
By 2024 the gaming press had lost its gatekeeper role. Coverage of the “anti-woke” thesis in gaming was driven almost entirely by YouTube and streaming personalities whose audiences dwarfed traditional outlets.
Asmongold (Zack Hoyt) — The central figure. OTK co-founder, World of Warcraft streamer turned political commentator. His Asmongold TV clips channel generated massive reach: one video on Sweet Baby Inc. pulled 1.3 million views in three days. Media Matters documented his pipeline from gaming commentary to broader political content. — Source: Media Matters, “Asmongold, one of the largest US streamers on YouTube, has leveled up from gaming to politics,” 2024. Link
In October 2024, Asmongold was banned from Twitch for 14 days after calling Palestinians “an inferior culture” during a livestream. He subsequently apologised and stepped down from leadership roles at OTK, Starforge Systems, Mythic, and Mad Mushroom. — Source: Kotaku, “Twitch Streamer Asmongold Banned After Racist Rant About Palestinians,” October 2024. Link
The Quartering (Jeremy Hambly) — Established “anti-woke” commentator. Far-right YouTuber covering gaming, comics, and film from a culture-war perspective. In 2024, signed a deal with Rumble for his “Quartercast” livestream (Monday-Friday). Regular cohosts: Luke Rudkowski, Hannah Claire, Melonie Mac. — Source: Yahoo Finance/Rumble press release, “Rumble Adds ‘TheQuartering’ Live Show to a Growing Lineup,” 2024. Link — Source: Wikipedia, “Jeremy Hambly.” Link
Mark Kern (Grummz) — Former Blizzard producer (StarCraft, Diablo II, WoW team lead). Became a prominent anti-DEI voice on X/Twitter in 2024, framing the Sweet Baby Inc. controversy as evidence of systemic ideological capture in game development. Claimed inside sources said ESG funding deals required studios to hire “DEI directors” and pay consulting firms. Credibility questioned due to his track record at Red 5 Studios (removed from leadership) and slow progress on crowdfunded game Em-8ER. — Source: Jon Del Arroz, “Former Blizzard Dev ‘Grummz’ Lays Out Gamergate 2 Erupting Online,” March 2024. Link — Source: RT, “Listen to gaming’s most important voice standing up to DEI,” 2024. Link
Second-tier creators (significant audience, less crossover reach):
- EndymionTV — Alt-right YouTuber focused on Sweet Baby Inc., DEI, and “wokeness” in games. Claimed Ubisoft insider sources; CD Projekt RED’s Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski publicly called his reporting “complete nonsense.” — Source: OpenCritic, “CDPR Boss Hits Back at Diversity Conspiracists,” October 2024. Link
- Smash JT — Used claimed anonymous BioWare sources to report internal Veilguard sales figures. Criticised for parasocial trust dynamics and unverifiable scoops. — Source: Fandom Pulse, “EndymionTV And SlopTube Grifting,” 2024. Link
- Upper Echelon — More investigative tone, covered cybersecurity and gaming industry. Interviewed Grummz in September 2024.
- HeelvsBabyface — Entertainment media commentary with culture war focus.
- YellowFlash 2 — Cited ESG influences as proof of corruption in game development.
- Sydney Watson — Multiple videos exceeding 1 million views on the Sweet Baby Inc. controversy.
“Anti-Woke Gaming” as a Content Genre
An academic study published in the International Journal of Communication documented the scale: “Through platforms such as Reddit and YouTube, these anti-woke gamers disseminate their views at an impressive scale.” The study by Adam Ruch cited Asmongold as exemplifying video game critics who believed left-leaning perspectives were being forced into games via ESG investment principles. — Source: Ruch, A., “Perceptions of ‘Woke’ Politics in Video Games,” International Journal of Communication, 2024. Link
The genre’s economics: outrage content generates reliable engagement. Endymion’s videos averaged ~200,000 views each. The content cycle was self-sustaining — each new game announcement or controversy provided raw material for dozens of reaction videos.
2. Resetera vs. the Rest
Resetera’s Position and Decline
Resetera, founded October 24, 2017 after NeoGAF owner Tyler Malka faced sexual misconduct accusations, positioned itself as the “serious” gaming forum — progressive moderation, industry connections, game journalists as members. By 2024 it had become a cautionary tale about moderation-driven community collapse.
Moderation controversies: Leaked Discord chats revealed moderators calling users derogatory names and mocking posters. Bans described as “draconian” — lengthy suspensions for stepping outside perceived groupthink. A July 2025 incident documented mass bans for users “not reading an article” that was itself internally contradictory. — Source: Famiboards, “What was the issue that caused a massive exodus at ResetEra over here?” Link — Source: JoyFreak, “ResetEra Controversy: Navigating the Challenges of Moderation and Community Dynamics.” Link
The exodus was plural, not singular: NintendoERA left for Famiboards. Xbox users left for XboxEra. Sales discussion migrated to Install Base/Icon Era. PC gaming discussions scattered to Reddit and Discord. Resetera “gradually became a Sony forum.” — Source: Famiboards, ibid.
The consensus-market disconnect: Resetera’s collective opinion frequently diverged from market reality. Games that Resetera championed underperformed; games they shunned (Hogwarts Legacy, Stellar Blade, Black Myth: Wukong) became massive hits. The forum’s thread on Concord’s GamerGate 2.0 comparison — titled “Chuds furious about a consulting company” — aged poorly as the game Resetera defended collapsed in under two weeks. — Source: Resetera, “GamerGate 2.0? Chuds furious about a consulting company named ‘Sweet Baby Inc,’” March 2024. Link
3. The “Consultancy” Revelation
Sweet Baby Inc. and the Steam Curator Group
The company: Sweet Baby Inc. — Canadian narrative development and consultation studio, Montreal. Founded by former Ubisoft developers: CEO Kim Belair (scriptwriter) and David Bédard (product manager). Consulted on video game narratives to “promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within game narratives and studios.” — Source: Wikipedia, “Sweet Baby Inc.” Link
The portfolio (confirmed credits):
- God of War Ragnarök (narrative consultation)
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (script)
- Alan Wake 2 (refined Saga Anderson’s background and story arc)
- Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
- Goodbye Volcano High
- Sable — Source: MobyGames, “Sweet Baby Inc. games.” Link
The catalyst: On January 29, 2024, Steam user Kabrutus created a curator group called “Sweet Baby Inc detected,” cataloguing games that had hired Sweet Baby Inc. The group grew slowly until a Sweet Baby employee intervened.
The Streisand Effect: Chris Kindred, a narrative designer at Sweet Baby Inc., posted on X asking followers to mass-report the curator group and doxxed its creator (“The Steam curator harassment group Sweet Baby Inc detected is lead by this person, kabrutusrambo”). Kindred was subsequently banned from X for targeted harassment. — Source: That Park Place, “Sweet Baby Inc. Employee Begs Followers To Report Steam Curator,” March 2024. Link
Growth after the Streisand Effect: The curator group exploded from 9,263 followers (Feb 29) to 68,240 (March 2) — a 630% increase in three days. By April: 355,000+ followers. By mid-2024: 300,000+ members, making it the sixth most-followed Steam curator group. — Source: The Shortcut, “Sweet Baby Inc. detected has surpassed 300,000 followers on Steam,” 2024. Link
The GDC talk that kept resurfacing: Kim Belair’s 2019 GDC presentation “Now You See Me: Representation as Innovation” was repeatedly cited by critics. The key quote: “If they don’t see the value in what you’re asking for when you ask for consultancy, when you ask for research: go have a coffee with your marketing team and just terrify them with the possibility if they don’t give you what you want.” — Source: GDC Vault, “Now You See Me: Representation as Innovation,” 2019. Link — Source: Niche Gamer, “Sweet Baby CEO: ’terrify them’ if game devs don’t push diversity.” Link
Other consultancy firms identified: Beyond Sweet Baby, communities tracked:
- Black Girl Gamers — Consulted on Forspoken (Square Enix), character development for Black female protagonist
- DeiDei — DEI consultancy with game industry clients — Source: The Federalist, “Meet the Leftist Consultants Spoiling Beloved Video Games With In-Your-Face DEI,” January 2024. Link
The detective work: Players began cross-referencing game credits with consultant firm portfolios, checking IMDB listings, and tracking which firms appeared in which games. Smash JT reported that IMDB “accidentally exposed” upcoming Sweet Baby Inc. clients. — Source: Smash JT, “IMDB Accidentally Exposes All Upcoming Sweet Baby Inc. Clients,” 2024. Link
Media Response
Gaming press overwhelmingly framed the controversy as harassment. PC Gamer called consultancy “an industry-standard service that’s been normal for years.” Gamedeveloper.com asked “Why are Valve and Discord permitting harassment against Sweet Baby Inc.?” TheGamer’s Stacey Henley called it “the latest dogwhistle for rejecting progressive ideas.” — Source: PC Gamer, “A company called Sweet Baby Inc. has become the target of ‘anti-woke’ gamers,” March 2024. Link — Source: Gamedeveloper.com, “Why are Valve and Discord permitting harassment against Sweet Baby Inc.?” 2024. Link
The gap between press framing (“harassment campaign”) and consumer framing (“we just want to know who made our games”) mirrored GG1’s “Gamers Are Dead” moment — the press response was perceived as confirmation of the thesis it was trying to debunk.
4. Concord — The $200M Two-Week Game
The Facts
Developer: Firewalk Studios (acquired by Sony) Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment Release: August 23, 2024 (PS5, Windows) Genre: 5v5 hero shooter (live service) Budget: Initial development deal “just over” $200 million, reportedly exceeded. Excludes marketing, studio acquisition, and IP rights. Colin Moriarty cited $400M total; disputed by PlayStation developers. Peak concurrent Steam players: 697 Estimated total sales: ~25,000 units (10,000 Steam, 15,000 PlayStation) Shutdown announced: September 3, 2024 (11 days post-launch) Servers offline: September 6, 2024 Studio closed: October 29, 2024 — Source: Kotaku/Game World Observer, “Concord budget was $200M which did not include marketing,” October 2024. Link — Source: Wikipedia, “Concord (video game).” Link — Source: Variety, “PlayStation Closes Firewalk Studios After Shutting Down ‘Concord’ Game,” October 2024. Link
Why It Became a Meme
Character design criticism: The roster featured what critics called deliberately unappealing designs. Community complaints centered on unconventional color palettes, “ugly” character aesthetics, and the prominent display of character pronouns. One Redditor’s quote — “Concord might have the UGLIEST Character Designs I have ever seen” — became representative. — Source: Game Rant, “Concord Is Getting Flamed For Its Character Designs,” 2024. Link
“Who is this for?”: The character roster (described as including five Black women, four aliens, three robots, one white man) became the central exhibit for the “modern audience doesn’t exist” thesis. The question “Who is this game for?” became the defining meme. — Source: Know Your Meme, “Concord.” Link
The number: 697 became shorthand. “$200 million for 697 players” was cited by The Guardian, PC Gamer, ComicBook.com, and Insider Gaming as making Concord one of the biggest failures in video game history.
5. Dustborn — The Government-Funded Meme
The Facts
Developer: Red Thread Games (Norway) Publisher: Quantic Dream Release: August 20, 2024 Genre: Action-adventure, road trip narrative Peak concurrent Steam players: 83 Steam review score: Mixed (67/100 from 619 reviews) — Source: SteamDB/Steambase, “Dustborn Steam Charts.” Link
The Funding
- Norwegian Film Institute: 14 million NOK (~$1.4 million USD)
- Creative Europe (EU grant): €150,000
- Viken Filmsenter: 300,000 NOK — Source: X/Grummz, funding breakdown with documentation, August 2024. Link — Source: Wikipedia, “Dustborn.” Link
Why It Became a Symbol
The gameplay mechanics: The protagonist Pax has a superpower called “Vox” — word-based abilities including “Cancel” (isolates targets from allies), “Gaslight,” “Trigger,” and “Normalize.” These mechanics, drawn from therapy terminology and social media discourse, were received as either clever satire or a parody of progressive culture depending on the viewer’s priors. Many players were genuinely unsure if the game was satire. — Source: GameSpot, “Dustborn Review - Words Hurt,” 2024. Link — Source: Steam Community Discussions, “Confused about the game. Is it satire?” Link
The ratio: Millions in government grants, 83 peak players. This became the purest example of what critics called the “modern audience” problem — products funded by institutions rather than market demand, built for a demographic that didn’t materialise at the register.
Developer response: Red Thread Games complained of a “tidal wave of hate and abuse” and stated “zero tolerance for hate speech, harassment, and threats of any kind.” Director Ragnar Tørnquist claimed sales “significantly exceeded those reported online” but admitted they “fallen below the studio’s internal short-term expectations.” — Source: Bounding Into Comics, “Dustborn Developer Red Thread Games Whines About ‘Tidal Wave Of Hate And Abuse,’” August 2024. Link
6. Dragon Age: The Veilguard — BioWare’s Decline
Development History
- Started 2015 as single-player follow-up to Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Converted to live-service game in 2017
- Converted back to single-player in 2020
- Mass Effect team added in 2023 to push it across the finish line; new directors criticised existing work
- Released October 31, 2024 after nearly 10 years in development — Source: Gamedeveloper.com, “Report: Veilguard’s late pivot from live service spelled doom for Dragon Age sequel sales,” 2024. Link
The Character Creator Controversy
The character creator offered:
- Non-binary pronoun options (they/them)
- Top surgery scars (mastectomy scarring associated with transgender FTM transition)
- Vitiligo and cellulite options
- The game director was publicly trans
The top surgery scars generated the most viral backlash. Critics argued the feature had no basis in the game’s fantasy setting. Female gamers complained that the ability to feminise characters was “incredibly limited,” forcing masculine-presenting female characters even when maxing out feminine characteristics. — Source: Know Your Meme, “Dragon Age: The Veilguard Character Customization Controversy,” September 2024. Link — Source: The Federalist, “‘Dragon Age’ Indulges Trans Delusion With ‘Top Surgery’ Avatars,” September 2024. Link
Sales Underperformance
- Target: 3 million copies
- Actual (3 months post-launch): ~1.5 million — “nearly 50%” miss
- EA missed analyst expectations by ~$200 million for FY2025, posting $2.22 billion revenue
- EA shares dropped 18% on confirmation of underperformance — Source: Game Rant, “Dragon Age: The Veilguard Underperformed EA’s Expectations,” 2025. Link — Source: Vice, “BioWare Could Be in Trouble After EA Deal and Poor Dragon Age Veilguard Sales,” 2025. Link
The Baldur’s Gate 3 Comparison
Baldur’s Gate 3 (Larian Studios, August 2023) became the implicit benchmark for what a AAA RPG could be. Key stats:
- 20 million+ copies sold lifetime (as of early 2025)
- $657 million revenue on Steam in 2023 alone — outselling nearest competitor (Hogwarts Legacy) by $316 million
- €249 million pre-tax profit for Larian in 2023
- No microtransactions, no live-service elements, no DEI consultants credited
- IGN, GameSpot, and multiple outlets: Game of the Year 2023 — Source: Gaming Bolt, “Baldur’s Gate 3 Sold More Than 20 Million Units,” 2025. Link — Source: PC Gamer, “Baldur’s Gate 3 proves you don’t need microtransactions to be GOTY,” 2024. Link
The contrast was devastating for BioWare: Larian made a traditional, complete RPG with deep player agency, no monetisation, and outsold them by an order of magnitude. The “modern audience” argument crystallised here — BG3 was diverse (multiple romance options, queer characters) but the diversity served the game’s design rather than signalling a political stance.
7. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League — Rocksteady’s Fall
The Facts
Developer: Rocksteady Studios (Batman Arkham series) Publisher: Warner Bros. Games Release: February 2024 Genre: Live-service looter shooter (pivot from studio’s single-player expertise) Confirmed loss: $200 million (Warner Bros. Discovery earnings report) Support ended: January 2025 — Source: Game Informer, “A New Report Details How A Troubled Development Led To Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s $200M Flop,” June 2024. Link — Source: Bounding Into Comics, “Warner Bros. Discovery Admits To Taking $200 Million Loss,” 2024. Link
What Went Wrong
- Originally codenamed “Stones” — a multiplayer puzzle-solving game (scrapped end of 2016)
- Pivoted to ambitious Suicide Squad title; co-founder Sefton Hill expected 2019-2020 ship
- Culture of “toxic positivity” documented internally
- Studio had no multiplayer experience — boss fights and endgame content became repetitive
- Hill and co-founder Jamie Walker left Rocksteady mid-development to form Hundred Star Games
- QA department cut by 50%+ after launch (33 to 15 employees)
- Sweet Baby Inc. listed in credits (became part of the broader consultancy narrative) — Source: Game World Observer, “Chaotic story of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League reeks of ‘BioWare magic,’” June 2024. 8. The “Vote With Your Wallet” Phenomenon
Hogwarts Legacy: The Proof of Concept (2023)
The failed boycott of Hogwarts Legacy in February 2023 was the template. Trans rights groups and progressive gaming communities called for a boycott over J.K. Rowling’s financial stake. Result: $850 million in sales in the first week. Biggest-ever launch for Warner Bros. Games. The boycott’s failure demonstrated that organised online opposition had minimal impact on mainstream consumer behaviour. — Source: Fortune, “Boycott of Harry Potter video game backfires,” February 2023. Link — Source: Newsweek, “The ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ boycott failed,” 2023. Link
2024: Consumer Behaviour Actually Shifted
The pattern that emerged in 2024 was not traditional boycotting (organised refusal to buy) but something different: consumers simply stopped buying games they perceived as pandering and bought alternatives instead. The shift was observable in aggregate sales data:
Games that underperformed or failed (2024):
| Title | Budget/Context | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Concord | $200M+ dev | 697 peak Steam, 25K sales, shutdown in 2 weeks |
| Suicide Squad: KTJL | Rocksteady live-service | $200M loss (WBD confirmed) |
| Dragon Age: Veilguard | ~10 years dev | Missed target by ~50% (1.5M vs 3M) |
| Dustborn | Govt-funded | 83 peak Steam |
| Star Wars Outlaws | Ubisoft AAA | 1M copies first month (well below expectations) |
Games that massively overperformed (2024):
| Title | Developer (Origin) | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Black Myth: Wukong | Game Science (China) | 18M copies, $1B+ Steam revenue, 2.4M peak concurrent |
| Palworld | Pocketpair (Japan) | 25M+ units, 32M players in first year |
| Stellar Blade | Shift Up (South Korea) | 1M in 2 months (PS5); ~6.1M total by Jan 2026 |
| Metaphor: ReFantazio | Atlus/Studio Zero (Japan) | 1M day one, 2M+ total, Atlus’s fastest-selling ever |
| Elden Ring DLC | FromSoftware (Japan) | Continued massive engagement |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Larian (Belgium) | Reached 20M+ lifetime |
Ubisoft: The Corporate Canary
Ubisoft became the most visible casualty. Star Wars Outlaws underperformed (female lead plus perceived DEI narratives drew zero-score Metacritic bombing). Assassin’s Creed Shadows was delayed multiple times after the Yasuke controversy (see below). Ubisoft warned investors of revenue downgrade from €2.3B to €1.95B. Shares hit decade-low. Investors pushed for company sale. — Source: Fast Company, “Video game maker Ubisoft in chaos after anti-DEI backlash,” 2024. Link — Source: Slashdot, “Ubisoft Investors Push For Company Sale as Shares Hit Decade-Low,” October 2024. Link
Assassin’s Creed Shadows / Yasuke controversy: The May 2024 reveal trailer featured Yasuke, a historical African figure in feudal Japan, as a playable protagonist. A Japanese-language petition gathered 100,000+ signatures claiming the game “insults Japanese culture and history.” Historians debated whether Yasuke historically held samurai status. Ubisoft issued a public apology and delayed the game multiple times. Academic consultant Sachi Schmidt-Hori (Dartmouth) was harassed. — Source: TIME, “Assassin’s Creed Shadow Sparks Controversy Over Black Samurai,” 2024. Link
9. Japanese/Korean/Asian Gaming Renaissance
The Numbers
Black Myth: Wukong (Game Science, China, August 2024):
- 10 million copies sold in 3 days — one of the fastest-selling games ever
- 18 million copies in two weeks
- 2,415,714 peak concurrent Steam players — second only to PUBG’s all-time record (3.25M)
- Pushed Steam to 37 million concurrent users for the first time in platform history
- $1 billion+ revenue on Steam alone
- Expansion confirmed in development — Source: GamesRadar, “Black Myth: Wukong is ‘one of the fastest-selling games of all time,’” August 2024. Link — Source: SteamDB/Steam News, “Black Myth: Wukong peaks at 2.4 million players.” Link
Stellar Blade (Shift Up, South Korea, April 2024):
- 1 million copies in 2 months (PS5 exclusive at launch)
- ~6.1 million total by January 2026 (3.7M PS5, 2.4M Steam) per Sensor Tower estimates
- The censorship subplot: Post-launch patch altered some costume designs (lace added to cover cleavage). Fans accused Sony of censorship. Shift Up CEO Kim Hyeong-tae said changes were “intentional” and represented “the final result.” Community rallied around the game as a counter-example to Western design philosophy. — Source: KitGuru, “Analysts claim Stellar Blade has sold over 6 million copies,” January 2026. Link — Source: Den of Geek, “How Stellar Blade Became 2024’s Most Controversial Game.” Link
Palworld (Pocketpair, Japan, January 2024):
- 8 million copies in 6 days (Steam)
- 25 million units combined (Steam + Xbox) by February 2024
- 32 million players by first anniversary
- Dubbed “Pokémon with guns” — Nintendo/The Pokémon Company filed patent infringement lawsuit — Source: Gamedeveloper.com, “Palworld tops 8 million sales on Steam alone,” January 2024. Link
Metaphor: ReFantazio (Atlus/Studio Zero, Japan, October 2024):
- 1 million copies day one — Atlus’s fastest-selling game in 35-year history
- 2 million+ total
- IGN and GameSpot Game of the Year 2024 — Source: Gamedeveloper.com, “Metaphor: ReFantazio sells 1 million copies in less than a day,” October 2024. Link
The Thesis
The narrative that emerged: Asian developers were making games that prioritised gameplay, aesthetic appeal, and artistic vision without filtering through Western DEI consultancy frameworks — and Western audiences were buying them in record numbers. A Niko Partners analyst stated: “The success of the game shows that Chinese game developers have high-end development capabilities for AAA games and can compete with Western studios on the global stage.” — Source: Fortune Asia, “China’s Black Myth: Wukong beats records set…,” August 2024. Link
Stellar Blade and Phantom Blade Zero studios publicly shouted out Wukong’s success as helping to “unite diverse cultures.” — Source: GamesRadar, “Stellar Blade and Phantom Blade Zero studios shout out Black Myth Wukong’s global success,” August 2024. Link
Important caveat: The “Asian studios don’t do DEI” narrative oversimplifies. Baldur’s Gate 3 — a European game with extensive queer content and diverse characters — outsold everything. The differentiator wasn’t the absence of diversity but whether diversity served the game or the game served diversity. Player agency and quality were the actual common thread.
10. Platform Dynamics — How GG2 Spread Differently from GG1
X/Twitter After Musk (2022-present)
Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter (October 2022) fundamentally changed gaming discourse by:
Removing content moderation guardrails: X removed policies on crisis misinformation, COVID-19 misleading info, and “informational harm” concepts. Anti-DEI gaming content that would have been suppressed or algorithmically deprioritised on pre-Musk Twitter circulated freely. — Source: HIIG, “Two years after the takeover: Four key policy changes of X under Musk.” Link
Amplifying contentious voices: Harvard’s HKS Misinformation Review documented “a large increase in post engagement for all users, but tweet engagement for accounts active in far-right networks outstripped any increased engagement for general user accounts.” — Source: HKS Misinformation Review, “Did the Musk takeover boost contentious actors on Twitter?” Link
Sweet Baby Inc. went viral ON X: The entire consultancy controversy played out primarily on X, where Grummz, Asmongold clips, and Endymion content circulated without algorithmic suppression. Chris Kindred’s doxxing attempt on Kabrutus happened on X (and she was banned there).
Reddit’s Moderation Wars
Reddit became a battleground between moderator ideology and user sentiment:
r/pcgaming (largest PC gaming subreddit) banned X/Twitter links in January 2025, stating “X has become increasingly hateful, toxic, and less and less moderated.” Hundreds of subreddits followed. — Source: Mitrade/Slate, “Largest PC gaming community on reddit blacklisted Elon Musk’s X,” January 2025. Link
r/WhitePeopleTwitter was temporarily banned for 72 hours after Musk complained about content criticising him — demonstrating Reddit corporate’s susceptibility to external pressure. — Source: Slate, “Reddit and X: How subreddits are revolting against Elon Musk,” January 2025. Link
Gaming subreddits split: some (r/Games, r/GamerGhazi) maintained progressive moderation; others (r/KotakuInAction, r/pcgaming at times) allowed broader anti-DEI discussion. The result was information silos — users in different subreddits experienced completely different narratives about the same events.
Discord: The New Underground
Where GG1 organised on 4chan and Reddit, GG2’s coordination happened significantly on Discord. The Sweet Baby Inc. detected Steam curator had a Discord server with thousands of members. Discord’s private server model made it harder for journalists to monitor and report on organising activity — a structural advantage GG1 didn’t have.
The Key Structural Difference from GG1
GG1 (2014) operated in an environment where Twitter had a progressive moderation stance, Reddit had recently banned GG-associated subreddits, and 4chan remained the last refuge. The information flow was: chan boards → Reddit → Twitter (where it would be suppressed).
GG2 (2024) operated with X as an open platform, YouTube algorithms favouring engagement (which anti-DEI content reliably generates), Discord for private coordination, and Steam itself as a distribution channel for the curator list. The information flowed freely across all platforms except heavily moderated Reddit spaces — and even there, the sheer volume made containment impossible.
11. The Industry Backdrop: Mass Layoffs
The culture war played out against an industry in genuine crisis. In 2024:
- Nearly 15,000 known jobs lost in gaming (real number estimated 16,000+)
- 8,619 jobs lost in Q1 2024 alone — highest quarterly number in gaming history
- Studios closed: Arkane Austin, Ready at Dawn, Volition, Riot Forge, Firewalk Studios, plus several that never shipped a game (Ridgeline Games, Deviation Games)
- Major cuts at: Embracer Group, Unity, Microsoft Gaming, EA, Sony Interactive, Epic, Take-Two, Ubisoft, Sega, Riot Games
- 2024 layoffs exceeded the entire 2023 total (~10,500) in the first half alone — Source: Kotaku, “89 Days Into 2024 And 8,800+ Video Game Layoffs Have Been Announced,” March 2024. Link — Source: Wikipedia, “2022-2025 video game industry layoffs.” Link
This context matters: GG2’s consumer revolt coincided with — and was perceived by some as being caused by — genuine industry collapse. The layoffs gave ammunition to both sides. Anti-DEI commentators said studios were being punished for ignoring their audience. Industry defenders said the layoffs were caused by post-COVID market correction, over-hiring, and interest rate increases — not culture war dynamics.
The truth, as usual, was both.
Summary: What Made GG2 Different from GG1
| Dimension | GG1 (2014) | GG2 (2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Alleged journalist-developer relationship | Sweet Baby Inc. Steam curator |
| Core grievance | Ethics in game journalism | Ideological capture of game development |
| Primary platform | Twitter, 4chan, Reddit | X/Twitter (post-Musk), YouTube, Discord |
| Key personalities | Milo Yiannopoulos, Internet Aristocrat | Asmongold, Grummz, Endymion, Smash JT |
| Media response | “Gamers Are Dead” articles | “Harassment campaign” framing |
| Consumer impact | Minimal (no clear boycott successes) | Massive (Concord, Dustborn, Veilguard failures) |
| Counterexample | None clear | BG3, Wukong, Stellar Blade, Palworld |
| Industry context | Growing industry | Industry in crisis (15K+ layoffs) |
| Political capture | Bannon/Breitbart pipeline | Less clearly partisan; more consumer-driven |
| Outcome | Cultural radicalisation, Trump pipeline | Measurable market correction, studio closures |
