- Hypatia of Alexandria (c. 355-415 CE): Neoplatonist philosopher. Murdered by Christian mob (Britannica). Cyril later canonized (Britannica). John of Nikiu retroactively recast her as a witch (Wikipedia). “A policy statement” about unauthorized access to the sacred.
- Baubo (Greek mythology): Lifted her skirts to make grieving Demeter laugh, restoring spring (Wikipedia). Female obscenity as cosmic necessity. The inverse of patriarchal shame narratives.
- Sheela-na-gig (11th-16th c.): Explicit female carvings on churches across Europe (Britannica). The thing the Church fears most, embedded in its own walls.
Chapter 9 (The Heretics)
- Cathar Perfectae (12th-13th c.): Women with full spiritual authority to preach and administer sacraments. Esclarmonde de Foix (Wikipedia). The Albigensian Crusade as genocide in response to female spiritual equality.
- Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179): Trolled the Church from inside using visions as cover (Britannica). “If God Himself is speaking through you, nobody outranks your source.” Founded monasteries, composed music, wrote theology, conducted preaching tours, rebuked popes and emperors. Barbara Newman: visions as “modes of empowerment for a woman who would otherwise have no license to speak” (University of California Press).
- Margery Kempe (c. 1373-1438): Public weeping as disruption. Tried for heresy multiple times, never convicted. First autobiography in English (Britannica). The Bakhtinian “carnivalesque woman.”
Chapter 15 (The Golden Dawn)
- Florence Farr (1860-1917): Praemonstratrix of the Golden Dawn. West End actress. Shaw’s lover who was too radical for Shaw. Moved to Ceylon at 52 to run a girls’ school (Wikipedia). “Wisdom is a gift given to the wise.”
- Moina Mathers (1865-1928): First initiate of the Golden Dawn. Painted the Tarot. Henri Bergson’s sister. Led the Alpha et Omega after Mathers’ death (Wikipedia). The founding act of the most important magical order was performed on a woman.
Chapter 15-16 (Golden Dawn / The Beast)
- Dion Fortune (1890-1946): Founded the Society of the Inner Light. Wrote The Mystical Qabalah. Feuded with Moina Mathers (attacked by magical cats). Organized the Magical Battle of Britain – psychic warfare against the Nazis using Arthurian archetypes and synchronized meditation (Wikipedia). “Churchill had the RAF; Fortune had Merlin.”
- Helena Blavatsky (1831-1891): Co-founded the Theosophical Society (Britannica). The Mahatma Letters as proto-catfishing. Invented the Book of Dzyan and the Senzar language. SPR investigation (1885) declared her “most accomplished impostor”; SPR reversal (1986) debunked the debunking (Theosophical Society in America). The dark mirror: root race theory appropriated by Ariosophists into Nazi ideology.
Chapter 16 (The Beast) / Chapter 18 (Chaos Magick)
- Marjorie Cameron (1922-1995): Jack Parsons’ “Scarlet Woman.” Arrived as the result of the Babalon Working rituals (with L. Ron Hubbard) (Wikipedia). After Parsons’ death, inherited his magical tradition. Desert vision quest. Starred in Kenneth Anger’s films. Taught Anger Thelema. Burned most of her art as ritual sacrifice.
- Doreen Valiente (1922-1999): “Mother of Modern Witchcraft.” Caught Gardner plagiarizing Crowley. Rewrote the Book of Shadows. Wrote the Charge of the Goddess – “the principal expression of Wiccan spirituality” (Wikipedia). Possibly worked at Bletchley Park. Possibly infiltrated Neo-Nazis. “She wrote the Goddess’s lines; he took the curtain call.”
Chapter 18 (Chaos Magick)
- Genesis P-Orridge (1950-2020): Throbbing Gristle / Psychic TV. Founded Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth – chaos magick for the post-punk generation. The Pandrogyne project with Lady Jaye: matching cosmetic surgery to merge two people into one being (Wikipedia). The bridge from Western esotericism to internet trolling culture. “Belief is a technology, identity is a construct, and culture is a spell.”
The Gender Pattern in Book 2
The esoteric tradition was consistently more egalitarian than orthodox religion:

This egalitarianism was itself the troll. Simply by treating women as spiritual equals, these traditions challenged orthodoxy’s entire gender hierarchy without making a single argument about it.
Key Thesis Points for Book 2
- The esoteric tradition has been more feminist than orthodox religion for 4,000 years – from the Eleusinian Mysteries to Wicca
- Women’s contributions to the esoteric tradition have been systematically erased – Valiente wrote Wicca’s scripture; Gardner got the credit. Cameron carried forward Parsons’ tradition; he’s the one remembered.
- The “witch” accusation was gendered suppression – the establishment’s response to female spiritual authority
- The occult’s gender egalitarianism was itself perceived as trolling – treating women as equals was, in every era, a provocation
