  • 1980s-present Jul 2026 Greetz: The Warez Scene and the Art of the Signed Crack The people who cracked your software in 1990 didn't do it for money. They did it to be first, to sign the work with a screenful of ASCII art, and to throw greetz at their friends and taunts at their rivals. It was a whole competitive folk-art built on bragging rights — and it forked into the demoscene, one of the few subcultures a government has formally called cultural heritage.
