- 1814 Jun 2026 Lord Cochrane's Dead Napoleon On February 21, 1814, a man in military uniform arrived in Dover claiming Napoleon was dead. Lord Cochrane — war hero, Member of Parliament, and future liberator of Chile, Brazil, and Greece — had stockpiled government bonds. Markets spiked. He sold at the top. The hoax was discovered. Cochrane went to prison, was stripped of his rank, expelled from Parliament, and pilloried in effigy. Then he went abroad and became a national hero on three continents.
