Immediate impression: A man who has been doing a bit for so long that the bit has fused with the man. Stang in performance is a sweating, ranting, chain-smoking preacher of Slack, indistinguishable from the televangelists he parodies except that he is self-aware and they (presumably) are not. Off-stage, he is a thoughtful, articulate filmmaker and writer who built a functioning cultural institution out of a joke about a pipe-smoking clip-art face.

Energy: Revivalist. Stang channels the energy of American evangelical hucksterism – the tent revival, the AM radio preacher, the mail-order salvation – and redirects it toward the worship of nothing in particular. The energy is real. The object of worship is the joke. The congregation is in on it, which makes the whole thing either postmodern performance art or the most honest church in America.

Impression management strategy: TOTAL COMMITMENT TO THE BIT. The Church of the SubGenius works because Stang never breaks character and never fully commits to sincerity. The ambiguity is the product.
