Donath’s distinction from subsequent trolling scholars is methodological: she observed Usenet communities directly, documented what trolls thought they were doing, and built a taxonomy from observation rather than imposition. In an academic field that would later be dominated by researchers who studied trolling from newspaper clippings, Donath studied it from Usenet. The one later scholar to match the fieldwork rather than the clippings was Whitney Phillips.
