THE PRANKSTER THE PRANK OUTLIVED – In 1963 Kerry Thornley, writing as “Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst,” co-founded Discordianism and co-wrote the Principia Discordia with his childhood friend Greg Hill (“Malaclypse the Younger”). The two had been arguing about order and chaos in a Whittier, California bowling alley since the late 1950s, and the religion they produced – a worship of Eris, Greek goddess of discord, organized around the principle that you should not believe what you read, including this – became one of the most consequential underground texts of the century. (Wikipedia) Thornley is the co-author of Operation Mindfuck: the deliberate seeding of contradictory information into the culture to break the reader’s reflexive trust in any single narrative. The technique was meant to inoculate. It was the prototype for everything 4chan would later do for fun and Vladislav Surkov would later do for the Kremlin. The tragedy is structural: Thornley spent his youth teaching people to distrust the official story, and then the official story came for him. By the end he could no longer tell the difference between the paranoia he had manufactured as a joke and the paranoia that had manufactured him.

Social Persona / Impression Management
Immediate impression: Depends entirely on the decade. 1960s: a sharp, funny, ferociously well-read ex-Marine libertarian, the verbal one of the Discordian pair, the man who wrote the manifestos while Hill drew the diagrams. 1970s: a countercultural fixture drifting through anarchist and underground-press circles, still clever, increasingly unmoored. 1980s-90s: a man living rough in Atlanta, broke, estranged, certain that the government had reached into his past and rearranged it. The arc runs from prankster to prophet to patient.
Energy: Argumentative, generative, restless. Where Hill was content to let Discordianism remain a private cosmic joke, Thornley wanted to argue it, publish it, weaponize it. He was the missionary half of the operation – which is also why the operation reached him deepest. He believed his own jokes more than was safe.
Impression management strategy: OFFENSIVE AMBIGUITY. Where Hill played defense – a religion that has already refuted itself cannot be refuted – Thornley played offense. Operation Mindfuck is an active program: send the contradictory letters, plant the false leads, let the target exhaust themselves chasing a pattern that was never there. The strategy works beautifully on institutions. It works less beautifully on the person running it, who must hold all the false patterns in his own head, and who does not always remember which ones he made up.

Why This Profile Matters
Thornley is the control case in the Discordian experiment. Three men of nearly identical temperament took the same idea – that consensus reality is a fragile construct you can hack with contradiction – and ran it for forty years. Two of them (Greg Hill and Robert Anton Wilson) emerged amused, generous, and intact. The third did not. Operation Mindfuck assumes a stable operator: someone who can flood the zone with false signal and still privately remember which signal is false. Remove that assumption – through illness, through the genuine pressure of a real conspiracy investigation, through the simple corrosion of a lifetime spent treating truth as optional – and the technique turns on its user. Thornley is the documented proof that the trolling toolkit has a failure mode, and that the failure mode is the troll. Every subsequent chapter of internet culture that treats reality as a thing to be jammed for sport inherits both his method and his warning.
