The mechanism is simple and devastating: when a government entity passes a law favoring Christianity under “religious freedom,” TST demands equal treatment for Satanism. The government must then either extend the same rights to Satanists (politically untenable) or admit that “religious freedom” applies only to preferred religions (constitutionally untenable). Either outcome exposes the hypocrisy. Greaves is not trolling Christianity. He is trolling the gap between what America says about religious freedom and what it means.

The Thinking Atheist interview. Greaves lays out the whole operation: the Satanic imagery is a declared literary device – “the ultimate rebel against tyranny” – deployed as First Amendment activism for pluralism, not as literal worship. Embedded as a primary source because the method only reads correctly in his own framing: a provocation that announces its own metaphor, which is why the courts have had to take it seriously.

Social Persona / Impression Management

Immediate impression: Calm, articulate, bespectacled, mild-mannered. Greaves looks more like a graduate student than a Satanic leader, which is precisely the point. The disconnect between the branding (SATAN) and the presentation (polite intellectual) forces the observer to confront their own assumptions. The scariest thing about the Satanic Temple’s spokesperson is how reasonable he sounds.

Energy: Measured, intellectual, relentless. Not Crowley’s volcanic charisma or LaVey’s carnival showmanship. Greaves operates with the energy of a constitutional lawyer who happens to worship Satan – or rather, who uses Satan as a legal instrument with the precision of a scalpel.

Impression management strategy: RADICAL REASONABLENESS. TST’s power derives from being more reasonable than the institutions it challenges. The Seven Tenets include “One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.” The establishment cannot attack the tenets without revealing that its own principles are less humane. The branding forces the confrontation; the reasonableness wins it.

The mechanism is fully visible: “We are using Satan to test whether you actually believe in religious freedom.” The establishment’s inability to respond effectively is not because the tactic is hidden but because acknowledging it would require admitting the principle it exposes.

Authenticity assessment: COMPLEX. Is TST a “real” religion? The question is the point. TST argues that if the government gets to define which religions are “real,” religious freedom does not exist. The sincerity question is itself the weapon. Greaves has been consistent: TST’s tenets represent his genuine values. The Satanic branding is a strategic choice. Both statements are true simultaneously.
