Girard is the Rosetta Stone between books. The Fires of History’s immune system thesis is Girard’s scapegoat mechanism viewed from the opposite direction: when the immune system works, the culture metabolizes provocation and grows stronger (Nasreddin). When it fails, the culture executes the provocateur and calls it justice (Socrates). Girard named the failure mode. Book 1 named the success mode.
