THE REVISIONIST MYTHMAKER — Subject applied Hislop’s method to Sumerian mythology: took real ancient figures (the Anunnaki, a class of Mesopotamian deities) stripped of all scholarly context and rebuilt them as extraterrestrials from a planet “Nibiru” who engineered humans as a slave species to mine gold. Published The Twelfth Planet (1976), the first of the seven-volume Earth Chronicles. Academically demolished by every Sumerologist who read it; commercially one of the most successful pseudohistories ever written, with millions of copies sold and a television industry built on top of it.

Immediate impression: The credentialed-sounding outsider scholar. Spoke in the register of philology — roots, cognates, “what the text actually says” — which reads as rigor to an audience that cannot check him and as theater to anyone who can.

Energy: Patient, professorial, certain. Never raised his voice because he never had to; the certainty did the work. Presented fringe claims in the cadence of settled fact.

Impression management strategy: Borrowed authority. The apparatus of scholarship — footnotes, untranslated words, a seven-volume œuvre — performs the function the scholarship itself cannot. The form is academic; the content is not. That mismatch is the entire grift, and it is invisible to the lay reader, which is the point.

Sitchin is Hislop’s mirror image. Where Hislop demonized Babylon by welding it to Catholicism, Sitchin upgraded Mesopotamia by welding it to aliens. Both operations erase the actual civilization — the one that invented writing, mathematics, astronomy, law, and literature — and replace it with a fantasy that is more widely believed than the scholarship. The ancient Near East cannot escape: it is either the secret villain or the secret spaceport. The real Sumer disappears in both.
